When the Body Says Stop: Dealing with Setbacks

I was finally gaining momentum. I was moving more, feeling better, even getting excited to lace up my shoes each day. And then, just like that, my body hit the brakes. A sharp pain along the outside of my knee that wouldn’t go away. The kind of pain you hope is just “nothing”… but deep down, you know better.

After some rest and research, I got the verdict: IT band strain.

If you’ve had one, you know how frustrating it can be. The pain, the stiffness, the sudden halt to all your progress. For those who haven’t, it’s a band of connective tissue that runs along the outside of your thigh—from your hip to your shin—and when it’s inflamed or overused, it can sideline you fast.

Here’s what I’ve learned (and am still learning) in this slower, harder chapter of my journey:

1. Pain is not failure.

I’ve had to remind myself that getting injured doesn’t mean I did something wrong or that I’m back at square one. It just means I need to listen more carefully to what my body is trying to tell me.

2. Rest is part of progress.

I hate slowing down. But healing is part of the work. Sometimes, the most disciplined thing you can do is not push through. Rest isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.

3. There’s always something I can do.

Even with a strain, I can still focus on nutrition. I can stretch safely. I can sleep better. I can take care of my mental health. Movement isn’t the only tool in my toolbox.

4. Setbacks are temporary.

Right now, it feels like a detour. But I’ve taken detours before, and I’ve still made it to where I was going. Healing might take months, but it will pass. And when it does, I’ll start again—stronger and more mindful than before.

I didn’t want to write this post because it feels like I'm making an excuse. I I wanted to tell you I was crushing my workouts, not resting my leg and googling “foam roller techniques.” But I made a promise to be honest—and this is part of the story, too.

If you're dealing with an injury, illness, or any setback right now, I hope you’ll give yourself grace. You haven’t failed. You're still in the fight.

And so am I.

Let’s heal—and move forward—together.
